RV & Camper Insurance

An RV is a vehicle when it is moving and a house when it is parked. Most coverage problems come from insuring only one of those two things.

Motorized vs. towable: how coverage works

The type of RV changes where your liability coverage comes from.

Motorhomes (Class A, B, C)Travel trailers & fifth wheels
Liability on the roadOn the RV policy itself, like a carGenerally extends from the auto policy on the vehicle doing the towing
Physical damageCollision and comprehensive on the RV policyNeeds its own coverage — the tow vehicle’s policy typically does not pay to repair the trailer
Liability at the campsiteAvailable through vacation or campsite liability on many RV policiesSame — and important, because the auto policy’s liability usually stops once the trailer is unhitched

The unhitched trailer gap

A guest trips on your trailer steps, or a campfire at your site spreads. Your auto policy probably will not respond because no vehicle is involved, and your homeowners policy may limit coverage away from home. Campsite liability on an RV policy is built for exactly this.

Coverages built for RVs

Personal effects

Clothing, cookware, electronics, and gear kept in the RV. Homeowners coverage for belongings away from home is often limited.

Total loss replacement

Some carriers will replace a newer RV with a new model of similar kind if it is totaled in the first years, rather than paying depreciated value.

Emergency expense

Hotel, meals, and transportation if a covered breakdown or accident strands you far from home.

Roadside assistance

Towing an RV is not like towing a sedan. Make sure the provider can handle the size and weight of your rig.

Attached accessories

Awnings, satellite dishes, solar panels, and added equipment, which may need to be scheduled.

Full-timer coverage

If the RV is your primary residence, ask for coverage that works more like a homeowners policy, including broader liability.

Seasonal sites and park models

A camper that stays put on a seasonal site all summer is a different risk from one that tours the country, and it may be eligible for different — sometimes less expensive — coverage. Park model RVs that are rarely or never moved can fall somewhere between an RV policy and a dwelling policy.

The campground’s own insurance protects the campground, not your unit, your belongings, or you if a guest is injured at your site. Many campgrounds require you to carry your own liability coverage and to show proof of it.

Common questions

Can I rent my RV out through a peer-to-peer platform?

A personal RV policy generally excludes renting the RV to others. Some platforms provide coverage during rentals, but it may not replace your own coverage or protect you completely. Talk to us before you list it.

Do I need to insure a travel trailer if my truck is insured?

Your truck’s auto policy usually extends liability while you are towing, but it typically will not pay to repair or replace the trailer itself, and it will not cover your belongings inside or your liability once the trailer is unhitched.

Can I suspend coverage while the RV is in storage?

Many carriers offer a storage option that reduces road coverage while keeping comprehensive in place for theft, fire, and weather damage. Coverage should not be dropped entirely; storage lots have losses too.

Does my umbrella cover the RV?

It can, if the RV is disclosed to the umbrella carrier and carries the underlying liability limit the umbrella requires.
