WHAT’S COVERED

What a New Jersey auto policy protects

NJ requires liability and PIP at a minimum, but a smart policy goes further. We tailor each coverage and limit to how you drive — real protection without paying for what you don’t need.

Liability (Bodily Injury & Property Damage)

Pays for injuries and damage you cause to others in an at-fault accident. Required in NJ — higher limits protect your home and savings beyond the state minimum.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

NJ’s no-fault coverage pays your and your passengers’ medical bills after an accident, regardless of who caused it. You choose the limit and how it coordinates with health insurance.

Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist

Protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough to cover your injuries — an all-too-common situation on New Jersey roads.

Collision

Repairs or replaces your own vehicle after a crash, regardless of fault. Required if your car is financed or leased.

Comprehensive

Covers non-collision damage — theft, vandalism, fire, flooding, storms, and hitting an animal.

Optional protections

Round out your policy with rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, gap coverage, and new-car replacement.

COMMON QUESTIONS

New Jersey auto insurance FAQs

Straight answers to what New Jersey drivers ask us most.

Yes. Every registered vehicle in NJ must carry at least liability and Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Driving uninsured can bring fines, license and registration suspension, and other penalties.

NJ is a no-fault state, so Personal Injury Protection pays medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident regardless of who caused it. You select the PIP limit and can choose whether your health insurance is the primary payer, which affects your premium.

The Basic Policy is a low-cost, bare-bones option with very limited liability and PIP and no required uninsured-motorist coverage. The Standard Policy offers the full range of coverages and limits most drivers actually need. We help you weigh the savings against the exposure.

When you buy NJ auto insurance you choose your tort option. The Limited Right to Sue lowers your premium but restricts your ability to sue for pain and suffering to certain serious injuries. The Unlimited Right to Sue costs more but preserves your full right to sue. It is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — choices on your policy.

New Jersey sets a minimum, but the minimum rarely covers a serious accident — and you are personally responsible for anything above your limit. We usually recommend higher limits, often paired with an umbrella policy, to protect your home and savings. (Note: NJ minimum limits have been increasing in recent years — we confirm the current figures for you.)

Generally, yes — licensed drivers you give permission to are usually covered, but there are exceptions, such as excluded drivers or household members who are not listed. We make sure everyone who regularly drives your vehicle is properly accounted for.

It can, depending on fault, severity, and your history. For minor incidents it is sometimes better to pay out of pocket. As an independent agency, we can re-shop your policy across carriers if your renewal jumps.

They are optional in NJ unless your vehicle is financed or leased, but they protect your own car. For newer vehicles they are usually worth it; for older, low-value cars we help you weigh the premium against the payout you would actually receive.

Yes — most carriers offer a multi-policy discount for bundling, and often more for adding umbrella. As an independent agency we can bundle across carriers to find the best combined price, not just one company’s package.

Options include raising deductibles, bundling policies, good-driver and telematics discounts, and reviewing your coverage choices and tort option. We find legitimate savings without leaving you underinsured.
