Jewelry & Valuables Insurance

Your homeowners policy covers your engagement ring. It just may cover it for a small fraction of what it cost, and only for some of the ways you could lose it.

The limit hidden inside your homeowners policy

Homeowners and renters policies contain special limits for certain categories of property. Jewelry, watches, and furs are the best known: the standard homeowners form caps theft of these items at $1,500 in total — not per item. Some policies set the number higher or lower, and similar sublimits often apply to silverware, firearms, collectibles, and cash.

So if a $9,000 ring and a $3,000 watch are stolen in the same burglary, the policy may pay $1,500 for both, minus your deductible. And if the stone simply falls out of its setting and is never found, a standard policy may not pay anything at all.

Look at your homeowners or renters declarations page and policy form for “special limits of liability.” If you own anything worth more than those limits, it should be scheduled.

Unscheduled vs. scheduled coverage

Scheduling means listing an item individually, with its appraised value, on an endorsement or a separate policy.

What can be scheduled

Jewelry & watches

Engagement and wedding rings, heirloom pieces, luxury watches.

Fine art & collectibles

Paintings, sculpture, coins, stamps, sports memorabilia, and similar collections.

Firearms

Collections that exceed the policy’s theft sublimit for firearms.

Musical instruments, cameras, and more

Valuable equipment, as long as it is not used to earn income — professional gear needs commercial coverage.

Getting the value right

Appraisals. Carriers usually want a recent appraisal or a sales receipt for newly purchased items. Precious metal and stone prices move, so an appraisal from fifteen years ago may leave you underinsured — or paying for more coverage than you need. Updating every few years is a sound habit.

How claims are paid. Read whether the policy pays to replace the item with one of like kind and quality, often through the carrier’s jewelry partner, or pays cash. For a unique or sentimental piece, that distinction matters.

Photographs and paperwork. Keep photos, appraisals, and receipts somewhere other than the jewelry box. A cloud folder is fine.

Common questions

Should I schedule on my homeowners policy or buy a separate jewelry policy?

Both work. An endorsement keeps everything in one place. A standalone policy can keep a jewelry claim off your homeowners record and may offer broader terms. We can price both.

Does scheduled jewelry cover me when I travel?

Most scheduled coverage is worldwide. Confirm it on your policy before an overseas trip, and keep the paperwork accessible.

I just got engaged. When should I insure the ring?

As soon as you have it. Coverage can usually start from the jeweler’s receipt, with an appraisal to follow. The day between purchase and proposal is not a time to be uninsured.

Is gradual wear covered?

No. Wear and tear, gradual deterioration, and damage from repairs are typically excluded even on scheduled coverage.
