Classic & Collector Car Insurance

A 1967 Mustang is not insured like a 2019 Camry, and it should not be. Collector car insurance is built around what the car is worth to the market — and to you — rather than what a depreciation table says.

Why a standard auto policy falls short

The biggest difference is how a total loss is paid.

Standard auto policyCollector car policy
Total loss settlementUsually actual cash value, as the insurer determines it at the time of lossTypically an agreed or guaranteed value set when the policy is written
AppreciationNot reflected — older cars are treated as depreciatedValue can be reviewed and raised as the car appreciates
RepairsMay use generic or aftermarket partsOften allows specialty shops and period-correct parts
PremiumPriced for daily drivingOften considerably lower, reflecting limited use

What collector policies usually expect in return

Collector policies cost less because they assume the car is driven less and cared for more. Common conditions include:

Limited use. Club events, shows, parades, and pleasure drives — not commuting, errands, or business use. Some policies set a mileage allowance; others do not but restrict how the car is used.

Secure storage. Usually an enclosed, locked garage or storage unit when the car is not in use.

A regular car for daily driving. Most carriers require each household driver to have another vehicle for everyday use, and they look at driver age and driving records.

Tell us how you really use it

A loss that happens while the car is being used outside the policy’s conditions can be disputed. If the car is your weekend driver and occasionally the way to dinner, say so, and we will find the policy written for that.

Coverage options worth asking about

Agreed or guaranteed value

The amount paid if the car is a total loss, agreed upfront rather than argued after the fact.

Spare parts

Coverage for the parts you have collected for the car, at home or in storage.

Under restoration

Coverage while a car is being rebuilt, with a value that can grow as the work progresses.

Flatbed towing

Towing that will not damage a low-slung or delicate car.

Auto show & event medical

Coverage for incidents at shows, rallies, and club events.

Inflation guard

Automatic value increases during the term for cars that are appreciating.

What counts as a collector vehicle

More than you might think. Carriers commonly write classic and antique cars, muscle cars, vintage trucks, modern collectibles and exotics, kit cars and restomods, vintage motorcycles, and military vehicles and tractors. Each carrier has its own age and condition guidelines.

We place collector vehicles with specialty collector-car insurers, including Hagerty, and can compare options when more than one fits.

Common questions

How is the agreed value set?

Usually based on the car’s condition, documentation, recent comparable sales, and in some cases an appraisal or photos. Keep receipts for restoration work and significant parts.

Can I drive my collector car to work occasionally?

Most collector policies exclude commuting. Some offer more flexible usage. If you plan to drive the car regularly, it may belong on a standard policy with an agreed value endorsement, if available.

My teenager wants to drive the classic. Is that allowed?

Many collector policies have minimum driver ages or experience requirements. Ask before handing over the keys.

Does the car need special registration?

Historic or antique registration rules in New Jersey and Pennsylvania carry their own usage limits, separate from your insurance conditions. Check with NJ MVC or PennDOT, and make sure the two line up.

Let’s agree on what your car is worth

Tell us about the car, how you store it, and how you drive it. We will match it with a collector policy built for that use.
